Preparing for the arrival of your baby is not only overwhelming, but also expensive. There are many costs associated with having a baby, including decorating a nursery. Shopping for baby products can surely tempt any future parent. However, there are several ways families on a budget can save when it comes to decorating.
Arranging and decorating the baby’s room can easily go from being fun to challenging for many new parents. Most of us want the room to be warm, welcoming and of course cheerful. Here are several ways to get all the items that you need and some of the things that you really want without spending too much money.
The easiest way to save money when decorating a nursery is: PAINT. Wall painting is one of the cheapest and best decorating ideas for a baby’s room. A freshly painted room creates a whole new feel. By doing the labor yourself is even more rewarding and a fun and affordable way to add personal touches.
Children live in a world of colors and different colors attract them and send them a certain mood or “message”. Bright and colorful wall paints will help generate an exciting and positive atmosphere for babies. A monotonous room will certainly demoralize them. Fresh and vivid colors can lead to an active and energetic behavior. The paintings that you choose must be in tune with other various objects in the room.Overall it should be a place that emanates positive and vibrant energy. As parents it is better to provide chromatic alternatives, various combinations that will stimulate your baby’s creativity.
The easiest way to save money when you furnish your baby’s room is to accept gifts from other mothers and to shop online or second-hand shops. Shopping online gives you a way to compare prices from many different retailers and choose the best one. While shopping at thrift stores and auction sales gives you the opportunity to snatch something vintage or unique at a much cheaper cost. There are also cases when used items are of superior quality than those new ones. You can negotiate the items’ price in order to fit your budget. And don’t forget, a lot of the baby items you will only use for a couple of months, so is it really worth paying full price? We were lucky to get a lot of the items passed down to us from relatives.
Another great way to brighten up the room without breaking your wallet is investing into a nice, colorful rug. While a good, affordable rug might not be easy to find, planning ahead and keeping your eyes open should help you find the perfect one just in time. IKEA is a great place to find great, inexpensive rugs.
If you are not ready to spend money on a changing table, you can improvise by taking a regular table and cover it with a soft blanket. If needed, you can always change the baby’s diaper directly on the bed.
The list of items needed for a baby is a very long one: from clothes to furniture to accessories to toys. In any case the investment is high enough to tip off any budget. Therefore, create a nursery budget and keep your eyes open for deals! Add accessories such as lamps, picture frames, and crib mobile to your Baby Registry, and don’t forget to keep the baby’s safety in mind.

I don’t know how anyone shopped before the Internet was invented. The thought of coming into a store and purchasing anything right off the bat seems to me equivalent to gambling. You don’t know what that product retails for in other places, and you don’t know if is a good product. I almost never purchase anything without my four step plan.
1. Sign up to store’s weekly circulars
Do you get weekly advertisements in the mail from your local grocery stores about upcoming sales and specials? Those same ads are now available online, usually with store membership. The added bonus is that you can often add the items from the ad to your virtual shopping list, as well as clip coupons. You can then either print those items, or you can usually transfer them to your phone to be scanned at the cash register in the store.
Nowadays, not only grocery store have these weekly circulars, but other stores, as well. For example, Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Osh, etc. all come out with a weekly ad of specials. Check it out before going into the physical store.
2. Read reviews
Being able to read online reviews is the best money saver of all. You don’t have to waste your money on products that are made out of poor quality materials, or don’t do what they promise to because you can read others’ experience with the product. I don’t buy anything without reading reviews first. There have also been instances when, upon reading the reviews, someone actually recommended a better or more affordable substitute. So, take the time to read what others have to say without investing your money first.
3. Comparison shop online
When I need to purchase an item, whether it is shoes, a handbag, a vacuum, or a toy, I don’t march in a store, but I comparison shop first. I do check out the circular, but that doesn’t mean that just because something is on sale in one store, it can’t be found even cheaper somewhere else. The easiest way to comparison shop is to type in the name of the item in the Google search field. Then, numerous sites that are offering that product will pop up with prices. Remember to enter as many details as possible about the item, because slight differences, such as model number, year made, or even color, can change the price.
4. Search for discount codes
The last step in my plan is to search for a discount code. Once I find the item I want at the lowest price offered, I Google the name of the store or website, and type in discount code, for example, Gap discount code. Then, several websites pop up that offer the codes to what I’m searching for. If I am planning to physically go into the store, I look for printable coupons; if I am planning to shop online, I look for virtual codes, which are alpha or numeric codes that I will be able to enter in a special coupon field upon check out.
Follow my four step plan to saving on your next purchase!

Bisphenol A (BPA) has become a hot topic in the recent years. What is perhaps the most frightening thing for parents is that BPA is used in polycarbonate plastic baby bottles, cans and even toys. It is a chemical often used by manufacturers for the reason that it is durable and heat-resistant. When plastic is subjected to heat , (i.e. warming the bottle), Bisphenol A is activated. The same thing happens when the feeding bottle is washed too many times. Usage of bottles that contain this substance is considered extremely harmful.
Becoming new parents, your many worries include having your child exposed to chemicals, such as BPA. Experts state that BPA is designed to mimic the role of estrogen in the body which can affect child’s development.
Specialists say if babies are exposed to too much BPA, behavioral problems and hormonal imbalances may arise.
Here are some useful tips in order to reduce the BPA exposure:
- Purchase BPA-free bottles or plastic glasses helps to prevent serious health and development problems in children. We suggest Dr. Brown’s BPA Free Polypropylene Natural Flow Bottle Newborn Feeding Set .
- Use powder formula for your infant child. Formula stored in metal cans may contain BPA.
- Buy fresh groceries, including fruits and vegetables, instead of the frozen ones because the packaging may contain BPA.
- Avoid eating canned foods – coating used in cans often contains BPA.
- Do not pour boiling or very hot water, infant formula or other liquids into bottles that contain BPA while preparing them for your child.
- Use your microwave LESS! If you cannot avoid using the microwave, be sure not to heat the food in plastic containers. Use glass or microwave safe dishes.
- Buy casseroles and food storage containers that do not contain BPA.
- Buy BPA free toys for your kids.
- Use cups or cans made of glass or porcelain instead of disposable plastic glasses.
- Avoid taking coupons or receipts from ATMs for the reason that the substance used for printing them can contain BPA.
BPA is considered safe in small quantities by health authorities in most countries. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established a maximum acceptable daily dose of 0.05mg/kg body weight. Nevertheless, if you want to take proper care of your child, follow the tips mentioned above in order to cut exposure to BPA.
